What Is CritCom?

Effective interdisciplinary communication helps to improve outcomes in pediatric onco-critical care. Teams must be able to communicate successfully to assess, strategize and implement interventions for their patients.

CritCom is a survey to assess the quality of a center’s interdisciplinary communication around patient deterioration. Results allow the center to implement policies and training programs to improve communication and quality of care.

How to Participate

  1. Click “Take the CritCom Survey” above.
  2. Complete the brief intake survey.
  3. A CritCom representative will contact you using the information you provide for the next steps.

What CritCom Assesses

The survey evaluates the quality of team communication across disciplines (e.g., ICU, oncology) and professions (e.g., nurses, physicians) at centers that care for children with cancer who are at risk of deterioration. CritCom identifies strengths and challenges of interdisciplinary and multilingual communication for teams in diverse linguistic and cultural settings.

Who Should Participate

All members of the clinical team involved in patient care should participate in the survey, including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and other disciplines that care for hospitalized children with cancer.

How CritCom Works

When a team completes the CritCom survey, they receive a report with their combined responses. The CritCom Results Report highlights communication strengths and opportunities for improvement. Centers can use this report to develop interventions to improve communication.

CritCom Domains

CritCom includes 30 questions in six domains that examine different aspects of communication:
