Scholars Project
Establishing the First Dedicated Population-Based Childhood Cancer Registry and Network of Hospital-Based Childhood Cancer Registries in India
Current Role
Pediatric Oncologist, Head of Medical and Pediatric Oncology, Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai, India
This project established the first dedicated population-based childhood cancer registry in India. The registry will help in collecting high-resolution data on pediatric cancers in Chennai. It will also help in understanding the information needed for influencing policy on pediatric cancers. In addition, the project will include implementation science research to understand the barriers and enablers of establishing a pediatric cancer registry.
The lack of a comprehensive pediatric cancer registry has been identified as an important barrier to generating political interest in pediatric cancer. The data generated from the Chennai pediatric cancer registry will be the first step in sensitizing policymakers toward pediatric cancer in India. It will also be a model for establishing similar cancer registries in other regions of India and low- and middle-income countries.
Radhakrishnan earned his doctorate (D.M.) in medical oncology in 2011 from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India; he earned his MD in pediatrics in 2003 from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India.
He was awarded the silver medal for best resident during his pediatrics training and gold medals for best fellow in medical oncology and for best research by a fellow at AIIMS. These awards were conferred on him by the president of India. Radhakrishnan trained in the United Kingdom for two years under the International Pediatrics Training Scheme of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health.
“Unless you know the reality, how are you going to make a change? The first step toward making a change in the community would be to have a registry, because the registry is the gold standard for knowing what is happening on the ground.”
