The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and St. Jude joined forces in 2019 to combat childhood cancers in developing countries. This effort draws on IAEA's particular expertise and interest in nuclear and radiation medicine.

Children are four times more likely to die of cancer in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries due to a lack of affordable treatment and quality care options. The IAEA–St. Jude collaboration seeks to address this by raising awareness of childhood cancers, mobilizing resources to support member states in establishing nuclear and radiation medicine services, increasing training for professionals in radiotherapy, and supporting research in pediatric radiation oncology and related areas.
